A spermatozoon is the male sex cell or gamete that fertilizes the female egg or ovum in organisms that reproduce sexually, including all animals and some plants. Unlike most of the cells that make up multicellular organisms, spermatozoa consist of a head and at least one flagellum or tail, which allows them to move independently. Fertilization, union of a paternal sperm nucleus with a maternal egg nucleus to form the primary nucleus of an embryo. In higher organisms the essence of fertilization is the fusion of the hereditary material of two different sex cells. Learn about the process of fertilization in this article.

Spermatozoa are the mature male gametes in many sexually reproducing organisms. Spermatogenesis is the male version of gametogenesis and results in the formation of spermatocytes possessing half the normal complement of genetic material. In mammals, it occurs in the male testes and epididymis in a stepwise fashion that takes approximately 64 days. spermatozoa: [ sper″mah-to-zo´on ] (pl. spermatozo´a) (Gr.) a mature male germ cell, the specific output of the testes, which fertilizes the mature ovum (secondary oocyte) in sexual reproduction. It is microscopic in size, looks like a translucent tadpole, and has a flat elliptical head containing a spherical center section, and a long.

Gametogenesis (Spermatogenesis and Oogenesis) Gametogenesis, the production of sperm and eggs, takes place through the process of meiosis. During meiosis, two cell divisions separate the paired chromosomes in the nucleus and then separate the chromatids that were made during an earlier stage of the cell’s life cycle, resulting in gametes that each contain half the number of . Unique for its role in human reproduction, a gamete is a specialized sex cell carrying 23 chromosomes—one half the number in body cells. At fertilization, the chromosomes in one male gamete, called a sperm (or spermatozoon), combine with the chromosomes in one female gamete, called an oocyte. The function of the male reproductive system is to produce sperm and transfer them to the .

But before we investigate these aspects of fertilization, we need to consider the structures of the sperm and egg—the two cell types specialized for : Scott F Gilbert. Fertilization—Transfer and Fusion of Gametes.

Fertilization occurs when a spermatozoon and an ovum unite to form a diploid zygote. External fertilization occurs when this union occurs outside the bodies of the male and female, and internal fertilization occurs when the union occurs within the female’s body, almost always in the oviducts.

A spermatozoon (pronounced / ˌ s p ɜːr m æ t ə ˈ z oʊ ə n /, alternate spelling spermatozoön; plural spermatozoa; from Ancient Greek: σπέρμα ("seed") and Ancient Greek: ζῷον ("living being")) is a motile sperm cell, or moving form of the haploid cell that is the male gamete.A spermatozoon joins an ovum to form a zygote.

(A zygote is a single cell, with a complete set of MeSH: D This volume, and its companion volume on the spermatozoon, provide a wide-ranging analysis of the gametes and their reproductive role in humans.

Male gametes (spermatozoa) are produced by cells (spermatogonia) in the seminiferous tubules of the testes during spermatogenesis (Fig. ).Spermatogonia undergo mitotic divisions to produce additional spermatogonia, which differentiate into primary spermatocytes.

As primary spermatocytes differentiate into secondary spermatocytes, the chromosome number is halved by two meiotic events. Replacing and superseding all other works in this area, Dr. Lucinda L. Init was discovered that, whereas the fertilized egg of a roundworm contains four chromosomes, the nucleus of the egg and that of the sperm each contain only two chromosomes. Editorial Reviews.
